Robert (played by Robert Downey Jr.) is a young doctor in 1660s England, a profession revered and idolized by the public. Invited by King Charles II (played by Sam Neill), Robert decides to abandon his further studies in medicine to become a royal physician. Additionally, Charles II arranges for him to marry Celia (played by Polly Walker), who has no feelings for Robert but ultimately succumbs to this political marriage. In the royal palace, Robert meets the court painter Fain (played by Hugh Grant), a passionate man who encourages Robert to pursue his true desires. Robert discovers he has fallen deeply in love with Celia.
