The Turkish woman Umay (played by Sibel Kekilli), trapped in an unhappy marriage, suffers not only from a lack of love from her husband but also frequently endures domestic violence. This tragic marriage leads Umay to escape back to her family home in Germany with her son. However, her tragic fate does not end there; instead of finding a warm and dependable home, she is met with her family's cold mockery. For the sake of reputation, her family strongly urges her to adhere to traditional customs and return her son to her husband in Turkey. Faced with her family's disdain and contempt, the kind-hearted and forgiving Umay does not give up; she insists on raising her son and reluctantly stays with a friend. However, this is merely the prelude to the tragedy, as Umay takes her son to visit her dying father, only to unexpectedly find herself facing the barrel of her brother's gun. This film not only won the European Cinema Award at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival in 2010 but also received six nominations, including the European Film Awards and the German Film Awards, winning three major awards.
