Larry (played by Jason Robards) is a hot-tempered old man who owns a thousand-acre Iowa farm, pouring his life’s work into this land, making him the undisputed king of the estate. Larry has three daughters. The eldest, Rose (played by Michelle Pfeiffer), lives on the farm with her husband and two daughters; she is suffering from breast cancer and firmly believes she can recover. The second daughter, Ginny (played by Jessica Lange), also resides there with her husband, taking on most of the farm work. The youngest daughter, Caroline (played by Jennifer Jason Leigh), is a lawyer. When Larry starts to contemplate issues of inheritance regarding the farm, conflicts arise, and many secrets hidden for years begin to surface.
