An ordinary family is holding a memorial for the deceased head of the household, Sanlun, on the seventh anniversary of his passing. Sanlun's friends, Kanmitsu Soichi (played by Noboru Sato), Taguchi Hidemitsu (played by Shinro Nakamura), and Hirayama Seiichiro (played by Ryuji Kita), arrive as expected and reflect on the past with nostalgia. The widow, Akiko (played by Setsuko Hara), is raising her daughter, Fumiko (played by Yoshiko Kisaragi), alone. Now that her daughter has reached marriageable age, Akiko asks Kanmitsu and the others to help Fumiko find a partner.
