The story takes place in Russia in 1916, where the fall of the Tsar leaves the infant Princess Natasha (voiced by Meg Ryan) and her grandmother, Dowager Empress (voiced by Angela Lansbury), homeless and separated amidst the chaos of war. Ten years pass in the blink of an eye, and the former princess has grown into a beautiful girl named Anya, while her grandmother, who has never stopped thinking about her granddaughter, starts spending lavishly to find the princess. In a twist of fate, conman Dimitri (voiced by John Cusack) encounters Anya, unaware that she is Princess Natasha. Dimitri decides to have Anya impersonate Natasha to claim a hefty reward, yet during the process, a genuine bond unexpectedly develops between them.
