Miguel, a music-loving boy (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez), unfortunately, is born into a family that views music as a curse. The family only looks forward to Miguel growing up quickly to inherit the generations-old shoemaking business. The annual Day of the Dead is approaching, and on this day, the souls of deceased loved ones can return to the living world to reunite with their families through photos placed on the altar. In an unexpected turn of events, Miguel finds himself in the Land of the Dead, and before sunrise, he must receive a blessing from a deceased family member, or he will be trapped in this world forever. Miguel decides to search for the late music legend Ernesto de la Cruz (voiced by Benjamin Bratt), as he is likely his great-great-grandfather. Along the way, Miguel encounters the down-and-out musician Hector (voiced by Gael García Bernal) and gradually uncovers de la Cruz's long-hidden secrets.
