In distant Ireland, a clever and innocent young monk named Brendan (voiced by Evan McGuire) lives in a walled monastery. To fend off Viking invasions, the walls are continuously raised, and the abbot, Father Cellach (voiced by Brendan Gleeson), strictly forbids Brendan and others from stepping into the outside world. One day, a long-haired, humorous monk arrives at the monastery; he is the renowned illuminator Aidan (voiced by Mick Lally). Aidan had been working on a crucial religious manuscript, the Book of Kells, but the invasion by foreign tribes forced him to interrupt this sacred task. Drawn to the Book of Kells, Brendan is determined to help Aidan complete the artwork, even if it means defying the abbot's orders and venturing out of the monastery. The outside world is full of wonders and dangers... This film won the Audience Award for Best Feature at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 2009 and received a Special Mention at the Zagreb International Animation Festival in 2009.
