The story begins with a narration by Lex Luthor, describing Superman's heroic deeds and image. Lex portrays Superman as a god on Earth, but insists, "When the time comes, even a god must die." Louisa Lane and Superman are on a romantic date, but Louisa is not satisfied with the arrangement of their relationship. Superman insists that their relationship can only be secret in the Fortress of Solitude. He has yet to reveal his true identity as Clark Kent to her, even though Louisa has begun to suspect. Meanwhile, Lex's company has unearthed a spaceship, and while workers are performing the excavation, they accidentally release a genetically modified monster known as Doomsday. After killing all the workers, Doomsday makes its way to the city, killing deer, dogs, and their owners along the way. Once Doomsday reaches the big city, it is discovered by Superman, and a battle ensues. Ultimately, Superman grabs it with all his strength and crashes it to the ground from a great height. Louisa and her colleague Jimmy Olsen tell the injured Superman that he has successfully defeated the enemy, but Superman dies from his injuries. The world collectively mourns their fallen hero and builds a monument to Superman in the park. Later, Lex kills his female assistant to ensure that no one knows the connection between his company and the emergence of Doomsday. Subsequently, Jimmy is quite saddened by Superman's death and accidentally ends up working at another major newspaper. After Superman's death, the crime rate increases, and a toy man controls a giant mechanical spider, taking a school bus full of kids hostage on a rooftop. Louisa decides to rescue the hostages and goes alone, but when faced with a crisis, Superman unexpectedly shows up just in time to subdue the toy man. Louisa joyfully kisses the resurrected Superman, but later, Superman's adoptive mother Martha questions why he hasn't called home, and Louisa also thinks Superman is acting a bit strange. It is later revealed that the resurrected Superman is actually a clone created by Lex, who collected Superman's blood during the battle with Doomsday, making the clone only obedient to Lex. Lex brings the cloned Superman to a room lit by red sunlight and beats him with kryptonite gloves to vent his frustration. After beating him, Lex goes to see the corpse of the real Superman that he had secretly excavated. However, in reality, Superman is still alive and is being secretly moved to the Fortress of Solitude by his robotic assistant to recover. The cloned Superman's personality becomes dark when he sees a report about a toy man killing a 4-year-old girl after escaping from prison. He immediately goes to kill the toy man, causing people around him to feel uneasy, and the police start to pursue him. Louisa believes he is not the real Superman. Later, Louisa and Jimmy discover Lex's plan to create an army of cloned Supermen. Just as Lex intends to eliminate them, the cloned Superman steps in to help, destroying all the test tubes of clone Supermen, as the cloned Superman removes the lead-filled kryptonite from his body, making Lex unable to control him. Meanwhile, the real Superman gradually regains his powers with the help of his robotic assistant, but upon hearing news of the army and cloned Superman going to battle, he rushes there. However, his powers have only recovered to 60%. The robot dresses him in a black solar Superman suit and hands him a kryptonite gun. Superman battles the cloned Superman, with his kryptonite gun being knocked away. Superman remains at a disadvantage, and as Louisa picks up the kryptonite gun to shoot the cloned Superman, it is destroyed by the latter. However, the kryptonite canister falls out. While defeating Superman on an oil field, the cloned Superman raises a nearby monument intending to finish him off. Superman uses his heat vision to break the kryptonite canister stuck to the cloned Superman's chest, releasing a large amount of kryptonite gas, leading to the cloned Superman's defeat. Before dying, he tells Superman to protect the people. Louisa confirms he is the real Superman and kisses him, also earning everyone's trust. In Louisa's apartment, Superman discovers she misspelled the word "resurrect" in her article and puts on glasses to prove he is Clark, prompting Louisa to joyfully hug him. At Lex's company, Lex, previously severely injured by the cloned Superman, is still alive, narrating that history has shown gods can die, but they can also be resurrected. He smiles to himself, pondering how to destroy Superman.
