When high school girl Mari Katsuragi (Tomoyo Harada) was 5 years old, her father (Yukihiro Takahashi) described a beautiful island in the South Pacific, New Caledonia, which he said was the place closest to heaven, where the locals lived happily and carefree, as if in a fairyland. After her father's death, Mari could not forget the promise to travel to New Caledonia with him. She bids farewell to her mother (Kayo Matsuo) and sets off on a journey to Australia alone. After several days of travel, Mari discovers that New Caledonia is not the island she had imagined. Later, she travels to Ile des Pins with a fake tour guide, Yuichi Fukatani (Toru Minegishi); and visits Uvea Island with Watanabe Taro (Ryoichi Takayanagi), a third-generation Japanese youth, but each experience seems far from what her father described as "the island closest to heaven." Mari's time here grows shorter... This film is based on a novel of the same name by Kei Morimura.
