In the 1930s, by the North Canal, Liu Xiang Village was home to the melon-grower Liu Shaoqing and her daughter, Meizi, who were known for their chivalry. Meizi lost her mother at a young age and relied on her father, who was skilled in martial arts. She had a crush on Wu Lian, the village teacher, but feared that her "fire" fate would harm Wu Lian's "water" fate, so she dared not reveal her true feelings. She often held the copper lock around her neck, inscribed with "Fire Fate Avoids Water," and resented her misfortunes. One day, she intercepted the "hawk" boat of the human trafficker Huazijins, rescuing a beautiful girl named Hua Sanchun from the ship. Meizi suppressed her inner pain and personally arranged the marriage between Wu Lian and Hua Sanchun, facilitating their union. Hua Sanchun, the daughter of Huaxiaojin, was influenced by her poor environment, being bold and alluring, desiring ease over labor. However, she was clever and yearned for freedom and true love. To this end, she adamantly refused to be the ninth concubine of the local bully, Longtou Shaozi. Her marriage to Wu Lian brought her the warmth and happiness of a family that she had never experienced before. When Sanchun became pregnant, Meizi took special care of her, often helping out at the Wu household. Unexpectedly, this led to a misunderstanding where Sanchun suspected that Meizi and Wu Lian were having an affair, expressing her anger and hurting Meizi with harsh words. As a result, the Liu and Wu families cut off their ties. Just then, the eve of the Anti-Japanese War was approaching, and storms brewed along the canal's banks. Wu Lian was determined to enlist and actively participate in anti-Japanese activities. He united the masses through martial arts, repeatedly pleading with the Liu father and daughter to teach their skills to the villagers. Putting the greater good first, the Liu family set aside past grievances, and the two families finally reconciled. Wu Lian engaged in underground activities, coming and going at odd hours. Sanchun suspected her husband of infidelity and secretly followed him. One day, after Wu Lian had just hidden an injured man in the Liu family's melon shed, the enemy tracked him down. After quickly aiding the injured man to escape, Meizi was about to leave the shed when Sanchun rushed in, demanding Meizi return Wu Lian to her. In a moment of urgency, Meizi devised a plan, knocked Sanchun unconscious, and hid her in a haystack. When the enemy burst into the shed, to prevent Sanchun from being discovered, Meizi bravely fought the enemies alone. Sanchun, from inside the haystack, witnessed everything and finally understood the truth. Regretful and resentful, she vowed to repay Meizi. In a fit of rage after discovering his daughter's betrayal, Huazijin stormed into Liu Xiang Village, and Meizi, outnumbered, was captured. In a critical moment, Hua Sanchun rescued Meizi and, under pretense, killed the human trafficker Jia Erha, who attempted to assault her. Huazijin, enraged by his daughter's defiance, expressed his anger violently. Hua Sanchun, upholding justice, shot her heinous father, but tragically, she too fell victim to Huazijin's cold shot. The North Canal flowed eastward with urgency. Meizi stood by the riverside, watching the surging waters. She pulled off the copper lock around her neck and threw it into the river. She would begin her new life.
