In the year 814, during the Middle Ages in Europe, there was an ordinary family in Germany. Due to the discrimination and various restrictions faced by women at that time, Johanna (played by Johanna Wokalek) grew up under her cleric father's belief in the preference for sons. Despite her father's opposition, the intelligent and studious Johanna received careful instruction from a Greek cleric, mastering Latin and Greek. As Johanna grew up, she fell in love with Count Gerold (played by David Wenham). Soon, war broke out, and Gerold went to the front lines. After a narrow escape, Johanna, using her exceptional courage and wisdom, disguised herself as her deceased brother and entered a monastery, where she practiced medicine and treated the poor. Quickly, Johanna gained the trust of the pope through her remarkable medical skills, only to find herself caught in the dangerous whirlpool of political and religious intrigue. Amid a series of power struggles, Johanna eventually rose to the highest position in the papacy, becoming a revered pope. She concealed her female identity while ruling the Catholic Church for two years, until she was ousted from power due to becoming pregnant from a passionate romance. This film, directed by renowned German director S?nke Wortmann, is adapted from Donna Woolfolk Cross's best-selling novel of the same name. With a blend of gender and religion, the film presents an astonishing and complex papal mystery that has been hidden for over 1,100 years to the audience.
