Josie (Drew Barrymore) is an editor by profession, but her dream is to be a reporter. Plain-looking, she has never kissed anyone and longs for her true love to appear. The newspaper decides to boost sales by having Josie pose as a high school student to investigate campus life and report on the behavior of young people. This opportunity fulfills Josie's dream. However, once she enters the school, she faces mockery from her classmates, who tease her as the ugly duckling.
