Tess (Melanie Griffith) is a secretary who matches her male colleagues in intelligence and competence at work. However, after rejecting her boss's almost "sexual harassment"-like advances, the capable Tess is reassigned, effectively demoted. Catherine (Sigourney Weaver) is Tess's new boss, who appears kind on the surface but is actually treacherous and greedy. She not only makes Tess's life difficult behind the scenes but also takes credit for the ideas Tess comes up with. When Catherine is injured in an accident and hospitalized, Tess seizes the opportunity to impersonate her boss and reclaim her achievements, leading her to meet a young entrepreneur named Jack (Harrison Ford). When Catherine finds out what Tess has been doing, she becomes furious and decides to expose Tess's deception.
