Ally (Lily Tomlin) was once a prominent figure in the poetry world, but times have changed so quickly that she has now become a forgotten poet. To make matters worse, she recently broke up with her girlfriend of four months, and her career has faced numerous setbacks. At this moment, Ally just wants to hide away and not deal with anyone. However, fate has other plans. Her headstrong eighteen-year-old granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner) arrives, asking her grandma for money for an abortion, but cash-strapped Ally is barely able to support herself, let alone help this troubled girl. In desperation, she reluctantly drives Sage around to visit her old friends and ex-girlfriends to borrow money.
