Located in Mukaishima Town, Hokkaido, it is a small town close to the sea. The stubborn elderly man, Tadao Nakata (played by Tatsuya Nakadai), angrily and unsteadily leaves this place, followed anxiously and guilt-ridden by his granddaughter, Koharu (played by Eri Tokunaga). It all starts with a rebellious remark from Koharu, who just lost her job and hopes to move to Tokyo to make a living, while also unwilling to continue caring for her stubborn grandfather, thus impulsively saying, "I don’t want to revolve around you like a prostitute anymore." Tadao storms out, hoping to find support for the rest of his life from relatives. The grandfather and granddaughter visit various family members, including his estranged brother, Shigeo (played by Shuji Otaki), his brother's inner wife, Kiyoko (played by Yuko Tanaka), his sister Shigeko, who runs an inn, his brother Michio (played by Akira Emoto), and Koharu’s father, Naoi (played by Teruyuki Kagawa).
