Pat (Bradley Cooper), a high school teacher with a naturally optimistic and cheerful disposition, is sent to a mental health facility by his parents after discovering his wife's infidelity, leading to emotional trauma. Upon his discharge, Pat returns to live with his parents, where he feels suffocated by their excessive care. At a gathering, he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a young woman who has just lost her husband and job. Tiffany's prickly nature puts Pat off at first, but as they interact more, he begins to see her endearing qualities, while Tiffany recognizes Pat's unwavering optimism. She asks Pat to practice dance with her for a competition, and their relationship begins to improve positively. At the dance contest, Pat finally finds his true love, and he and Tiffany’s lives emerge from the clouds to see the sun again. The film is adapted from Matthew Quick's novel of the same name. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012 and received numerous accolades, including four Golden Globe nominations, three BAFTA nominations, five Independent Spirit Award nominations, and eight Academy Award nominations. Jennifer Lawrence won the Best Actress award at the 70th Golden Globe Awards and the Best Actress award at the 85th Academy Awards.
