Charlie (played by Charles Laughton) is a small-time crook making a living by busking on the streets. One day, a woman named Libby (played by Vivien Leigh) attempts to steal Charlie's earnings, but he catches her. They begin to form an unexpected bond, and Charlie, feeling sorry for the homeless Libby, agrees to let her join him in performing. Libby, who is clever and possesses exceptional performing talent, catches the eye of a theater manager named Parnell (played by Rex Harrison). Parnell invites Libby to perform at the theater, but she wants to bring Charlie along, which he declines. The two part ways. Years pass, and Libby becomes a hot star, while Charlie has become a beggar wandering the streets again. The two, now in starkly different positions, meet once more.
