The plot describes young miner Paul, who is quiet and sensitive. His mother, Gertrude, turns to her son for love due to her troubled relationship with her often-drinking husband, leading to feelings that surpass normal maternal love. This situation affects Paul's relationship with his girlfriend Miriam, who, influenced by her family's strict religious beliefs, only seeks a spiritual romance and rejects physical passion. To escape his mother's control and the emotional setbacks from his girlfriend, Paul eventually finds solace in the arms of Clara, a woman separated from her husband, but soon realizes that they lack communication on a spiritual level. In the end, Paul abandons the monotonous coal mining town to seek a life elsewhere. The film, based on D.H. Lawrence's autobiographical novel, is directed by Jack Cardiff, a distinguished cinematographer who won an Oscar for Best Cinematography. The film delicately portrays Paul's complex psychological state, with excellent performances from Dean Stockwell, Trevor Howard, and Wendy Hiller, who play the family role well.
