The stage actor Jurobei (played by Hiroyuki Sanada) injures his ankle in an accident during a performance, forcing him to leave the stage and join a street ronin theater troupe. During this time, he meets the geisha Hanari (played by Rio Hayazaki), but due to their different social statuses, he is unable to get close to her. In his despondency, he spends time painting. The owner of the Edo-based publishing house Koshudo, Shigezaburo Tazawa (played by Franky Sakai), has half of his assets confiscated due to the shogunate's "Kansei Reforms." After the ban is lifted, the ukiyo-e master he trained, Kitagawa Utamaro (played by Shiro Sano), seeks other opportunities. By chance, Tazawa sees Jurobei’s paintings and is overjoyed, bringing him under his wing and publishing his works under the name "Toshusai Shakyo." Shakyo's bizarre painting style is initially ridiculed by the public but gradually gains acceptance and popularity, threatening Utamaro's status… This film was ranked fifth in the Japan Film Weekly's annual Japanese film list and won Best Actor. [Background] Shakyo officially debuted in May 1794 and vanished a year later in January, producing over 140 works in just ten months. His speed of creation and changes in style were unmatched by other ukiyo-e artists of the time. With the death of Shigezaburo Tazawa, Shakyo's true identity has become an unsolvable mystery.
