Max (Dustin Hoffman) was once a rising star in the news industry, but a mistake at work led to his demotion. Unable to recover, he was sent to a remote small town to become a small-town reporter, delivering insignificant news every day. One day, while interviewing at a museum, a man named Sam (John Travolta) took the museum's curator hostage at gunpoint. Sam had previously worked at the museum and lost his job during layoffs, unable to accept reality, he chose to express his anger in an extreme way. Soon, the sensitive Max realized he might use this incident to regain his reputation in the news industry, so he ambitiously sprang into action. As Max reported on the situation, more and more media and reporters gathered around the museum, and the situation quickly spiraled out of control.
