The departure of his mother leaves Lei (Alex House) with his brother Mori (David Rendall), who has been a recluse for four years due to mental health issues, an arrogant sister Lisa (Tatiana Maslany), a small house, and a cat named "Mr." Out of necessity, Lei moves back home and starts living with his siblings. With a passion for Gundam models and a reclusive personality, Lei struggles to adapt, especially with their grandmother (played by Masako Natsu), who was brought over from Japan by their mother. The grandmother does not speak English, spends her days staring out the window, takes a long time in the bathroom every morning, and enjoys watching air guitar performances.
The four of them and the cat living under the same roof gradually find connections as they adjust to one another. Lei's phone starts ringing more often, Mori takes an interest in the sewing machine left by their mother, and Lisa notices a quirky guy in her poetry class. The grandmother, despite her language barrier, has a remarkable ability to sense their emotions and makes delicious potstickers. Lei also decides to use the money he originally intended for model kits to buy a Japanese toilet. The family becomes subtly connected through their grandmother.
