The story takes place during the French Revolution, where a lawyer from London, Sydney (played by Ronald Colman), falls in love with a beautiful woman named Lucie (played by Elizabeth Allan). However, Lucie is already in love with another man, and soon marries a young French nobleman named Charles (played by Donald Woods). Sydney buries his feelings for Lucie deep in his heart and sincerely wishes happiness for the newlyweds. When the revolution breaks out and chaos ensues in France, Charles is implicated, imprisoned, and sentenced to death. In her despair, Lucie turns to Sydney for help. Seeing his heartbroken love, Sydney resolves to save Charles at any cost, even if it means sacrificing his own life.
