In 1936, a young British man, Cai Scott (played by Hugh Dancy), obeys his father's wishes and arrives in the British colony of Sharula. Here, the indigenous chief Belance warmly welcomes the foreigner and assigns him a special maid - "The Dictionary Lover," Selima (played by Jessica Alba).
