In 1975, Philadelphia, USA, the economy is in decline, and the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL lack motivation, facing continuous defeats and the boos from Philadelphia fans in the stands. However, this does not stop Vince Papale (played by Mark Wahlberg) and a group of old friends from enjoying the fun of football, even though his own life is quite disappointing—he has been semi-unemployed for recent years, and his wife has recently left him, forcing him to make a living working in a bar. The Eagles hire a new coach, Dick Vermeil (played by Greg Kinnear), to turn the tide. Vermeil proposes to recruit new players from all over Philadelphia. At 30 years old, Vince no longer entertains unrealistic fantasies about life, yet he cannot resist the encouragement from his friends, especially his bar owner's cousin, Janet (played by Elizabeth Banks), and participates in the open tryouts, becoming the only selected practice squad player. Training is extremely grueling, and collaborating with these physically strong players requires a strong belief. Vince's self-doubt is repeatedly dismissed by his friends, and he ultimately seeks to regain dignity and hope in life for himself and for the city.
