The story takes place in the American West plains in 1882, where a group of people known as "pioneers" live freely, choosing land, working hard, herding cattle and sheep, and leading a prosperous life. Charlie (played by Kevin Costner), Sue (played by Annette Bening), Moss (played by Abraham Benrubi), and Spearman (played by Robert Duvall) are among them. However, as time goes on and the population increases, the vast plains can no longer be a territory for free roaming; the four simple and kind-hearted individuals have not yet noticed the changes in the situation. In an unfortunate event, the bully Baxter (played by Kim Coates) in the western town teams up with the sheriff to bully Moss, who comes to buy supplies, and prohibits the "pioneers" from approaching the town again. It is only then that Charlie and his friends realize it’s time to take up arms and fight for their dignity and freedom.
