"Heaven's Gate" seems to have always been shrouded in the shadow of its box office failure, which led to the bankruptcy of United Artists, causing most viewers to lose interest in it, even completely overlooking the essence of the film. However, Michael Cimino's majestic portrayal of the landscapes of America’s Midwest, along with a storyline that defies mainstream cinema's reliance on tense and flashy gimmicks, is straightforward yet not dull, filled with poetic depictions of the everyday, as well as many interesting segments such as a musician skating while playing the violin, a girl eagerly stripping down at the dinner table to enjoy sex, and gunmen dressed in suits on a train... If a film's merit is solely judged by its box office performance, that would be overly simplistic; it is unfortunate that this work has had to bear such a bad reputation for so many years—BY: Herbsttag
