Mickey (played by Greg Kinnear) is an insurance salesman who, thanks to his silver tongue, quickly establishes a solid foundation in the industry. It’s clear that the meager profits he's currently making can no longer satisfy his growing appetite, and he is actively seeking an opportunity that will allow him to rise swiftly. To escape the cold northern weather, Mickey heads south to reunite with his long-missed wife, Joan (played by Lea Thompson). To his surprise, this leads him to a glimpse of a promising future. Retired farmer Hal (played by Alan Arkin) becomes a stepping stone for Mickey's ascent, while the appearance of locksmith Randy (played by Billy Crudup) unexpectedly disrupts Mickey's plans. As time goes on, Mickey realizes he can no longer support the heavy lies he has woven.
