At the age of five, Suroku (played by Hiroyuki Sanada) was abandoned by his father, who left home, leaving young Suroku and his mother behind. He never knew what his father looked like and lived a life dependent on others, growing up in the Katada family in Joshu. After his mother's death, Suroku planned to venture out into the world, with Edo as his first stop. However, there, he led a carefree life. One day, he accidentally got involved in a dispute and unknowingly took revenge for someone, and while he was baffled, some people greeted him, some bowed, and others gave him money, making him feel like a hero. When did the inherently lonely Suroku ever get such treatment? He was somewhat taken aback and could not forget that thrill, becoming addicted to avenging others. Thus, he began to wander everywhere, seeking revenge for others, and seven years passed in a flash. After seven years of a wayward life, Suroku earned 15 ryo of gold. He was physically and mentally exhausted but still thought about returning home to build a decent grave for his mother. Upon returning to his long-lost hometown, he indeed felt a sense of familiarity, but Suroku always felt something strange in the atmosphere, as if the entire village was shrouded in an air of mystery. It was the will of fate that Suroku, who had been seeking revenge, was once again caught up in the quest for vengeance for his biological father. In the village, he encountered Taro (played by Yuho Murata), who had grown up with him and was now a station official. Taro told Suroku that there was going to be an act of revenge against the former Eight Prefectures official, Umetaro Katakura (played by Tatsuya Nakadai), who had killed his colleague seven years ago. Hearing this, Suroku perked up immediately and quickly applied to join Taro. Taro readily agreed, and Suroku took the opportunity to visit his mother's grave, where he found a circle of chrysanthemums arranged by someone, leaving him a bit uneasy. Upon returning from the graveyard to the village, Taro took Suroku to a small tavern, where several other avengers, who had prearranged to meet, were already waiting. After careful planning, they quickly dispersed. Suroku felt a bit disoriented, and what troubled him was the woman silently observing him from the second floor of the tavern; he recognized her as Taro's sister, Sen (played by Kyoko Suzuki). Walking to the coffin shop where they used to play as children, Suroku encountered his father, Katakura, who advised him. However, Suroku only felt that this person looked somewhat familiar but paid little attention. The old man in the coffin shop seemed to know the hidden truth, but at that moment, the police chief of Kanto Eight Prefectures, Shikibu Kanbara (played by Ichikawa Raizo), arrived, and Katakura quietly placed a bundle of chrysanthemums in the coffin he had prepared for himself before slowly lying down...
