After surviving life-and-death trials, Shinmen Musashi (played by Toshiro Mifune) serves a daimyo upon the recommendation of the monk Takuan (played by Kuroemon Oue), and he adopts the name Miyamoto Musashi. To hone his will and martial arts, he leaves his waiting love, Ato (played by Kaoru Yachigusa), and travels around challenging strong opponents. Along the way, Musashi defeats many skilled fighters and challenges the Yoshioka school of kendo. When the headmaster Seijuro (played by Akihiko Hirata) is away, all of the students are defeated, and Musashi leaves a challenge before departing. However, the Yoshioka disciples harbor resentment and devise schemes to eliminate Musashi, all of which are foiled. Meanwhile, Musashi unexpectedly encounters his long-lost Ato and Tsuji (played by Mariko Okada), and amidst the clash of swords, Musashi makes a decision about love and has his first encounter with his arch-rival Sasaki Kojiro (played by Koji Tsuruta)…
