After a fated encounter, Kojiro Sasaki (played by Koji Tsuruta) practices his skills with the sole intention of defeating Musashi Miyamoto (played by Toshiro Mifune). Following this, Kojiro travels to Edo to seek an official position, where he encounters Musashi and the two agree to a duel at the East Gate. However, on the eve of the duel, Musashi sends a letter requesting to postpone the duel by a year. The next day, Musashi, along with Jotaro (played by Masaki Sakurai) and Kumagoro (played by Haruo Tanaka), goes to the countryside where the three of them cultivate the land while teaching the farmers martial arts to resist bandits. During this time, A-Tsu (played by Kaoru Yachigusa) and Shuhi (played by Mariko Okada) come to find Musashi, but Shuhi unfortunately loses her life during the bandit turmoil.
