Young Arai Kenji (played by Shun Oguri) had been taking care of his great-aunt Tōki (played by Chieko Baishō) and her daily life. Tōki, who was a maid in Tokyo during her youth, now finds herself compelled by Kenji's persistence to pen down her long-forgotten tales of joy and sorrow. This takes us back to the early Showa period, when the young Tōki (played by Hana Kuroki) left her hometown in Yamagata and eventually became a maid for the Hirai family. The Hirai family lived in a small house with a red roof in the suburbs of Tokyo; the male head of the family (played by Kōtarō Katō) was an executive at a toy company, and his wife, Tomiko (played by Takako Matsu), was elegant and beautiful. Tōki admires Tomiko greatly and dedicates herself wholeheartedly to serving the Hirai family. One year during the Spring Festival, a new designer at the toy company, Masaharu Ita (played by Hidetaka Yoshioka), enters the Hirai household. Their similar interests and hobbies lead to a growing rapport between him and Tomiko. Meanwhile, as the war intensifies, couples hide their secrets from each other, drifting along with the tide... The film is adapted from Kyoko Nakajima's award-winning work that won the 143rd Naoki Prize.
