This film is adapted from the bestselling children's book series of the same name by American author Jeff Kinney. On his first day of middle school, Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) is anxious and desperately wants to stand out and become a star in the class yearbook. His older brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick) gives him a bunch of advice on what not to do, while his best friend Rowley Jefferson (Robert Capron) dismisses it all and continues to act as he did in elementary school, which frustrates Greg. Greg declines an invitation from the girl Angie (Chloë Grace Moretz) to join the school newspaper and drags Rowley into the school safety patrol. When Greg makes a mistake while trying to avoid three bullies on Halloween, he lacks the courage to admit it, allowing Rowley to take the blame. As events unfold, things get worse, and Greg's popularity at school plummets, threatening his friendship with Rowley...
