Coal miner Yusaku (Takahara Ken) accidentally kills a troublemaking thug, is sentenced to prison, and misses his wife Hikaru (Baisho Chieko) deeply while incarcerated. Fearing that he might disrupt her life and future, he voluntarily proposes divorce and sincerely urges her to remarry. Before being released, Yusaku writes a letter to Hikaru, saying that if she is still waiting for his return and has not married anyone else, she should hang a yellow handkerchief on the flagpole in front of their home. If he sees no handkerchief, he will leave forever. On his way home, anxious Yusaku encounters a young couple driving (Takeda Tetsuya, Momoi Kaori) and travels with them for a while before mustering the courage to return to his hometown.
