The story takes place in Spain in 1080, at a time when Spain was not unified but rather divided into three small countries that did not interfere with each other’s state affairs. Luliga (played by Charlton Heston) has fallen into disfavor with King Castile for secretly allowing the execution of the Moorish chief, ordered by the king. In an unfortunate incident, Luliga accidentally kills the father of his fiancée Jimena (played by Sophia Loren), leading to a rupture in their relationship. Not long afterward, the country Luliga is in faces an invasion from another nation, prompting him to rise up to defend the integrity of his homeland, ultimately driving the enemy back. However, things turn for the worse when the death of Castile ignites a power struggle between the two princes, Alforos (played by John Fraser) and Sanco (played by Gary Raymond), shattering the hard-won peace once more.
