Karen (Harriet Andersson), who inherited her mother’s mental illness, undergoes hospitalization and is then sent to a small island for rest by her writer father David (Gunnar Björnstrand). Karen's boyfriend Martin (Max von Sydow) is a doctor, and their relationship is currently at a low point; Martin believes that Karen has a chance of recovery. Her younger brother Minas, who is in his teenage years, is quite talented but appears somewhat anxious. The four of them are resting on the isolated island, but the unease within them seems to be slowly growing. Karen notices her father's brief emotional outburst after coldly observing her condition. The next morning, Martin and David leave on a small boat, and left behind, Karen begins to indulge in meditation, showing aggression towards Minas. Before their return to the island, Karen collapses inside a dilapidated wooden boat, claiming to her brother that she has heard the voice of God... This film is the first part of Bergman's "Silence of God" trilogy, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1962.
