The story takes place in America in 1987, where Adele (played by Kate Winslet) and her son Henry (played by Gattlin Griffith) are a dependent duo. By chance, while shopping, they encounter a bloodied drifter named Frank (played by Josh Brolin). In an unexpected turn of events, Adele and Henry take Frank home, and he sincerely confesses his dark past. It turns out that Frank is a fugitive who, in a fit of rage after discovering that he is not the biological father of his beloved son, accidentally killed his girlfriend Mandy (played by Maika Buckley). Over time, the relationship between Frank and Adele deepens, and they decide to run away with Henry. However, just as their plan is about to be executed smoothly, Henry reveals their secret to a precocious girl named Lenny (played by Brighid Fleming), leading to catastrophic troubles for Adele and Frank.
