Carol (Blythe Danner) was once a moderately famous singer, basking in the spotlight on stage. Now, nearly seventy, she is all but forgotten, living a solitary life since her husband passed away. Carol has been living in the shadow of her husband’s death, fearing loss and death, and her relationship with her daughter Katherine (Malin Akerman) is quite tense. Just when Carol is at her lowest, she is supported and encouraged by her friends Georgina (June Squibb), Sally (Rhea Perlman), and Rona (Mary Kay Place). Influenced by her friends, Carol gradually finds the confidence to embrace a new life and meets two men, Lloyd (Martin Starr) and Bill (Sam Elliott).
