Chuck Levine (played by Adam Sandler) and Larry Valentine (played by Kevin James) are firefighters at the same station, and they have a perfect work partnership and are close friends. In private, Chuck Levine is a ladies' man, while Larry Valentine remains devoted to his late wife and takes care of their two young children. In order to make their children the beneficiaries of his life insurance, Larry Valentine must get married. Lacking interest in women, he comes up with a "brilliant idea": to faux marry Chuck Levine as part of a same-sex couple. After a chaotic wedding ceremony, their lives undergo dramatic changes. To cope with government inspections, they live together and attend gay parties, making impassioned speeches to protesting crowds, and even engaging in fights. They transform from "fake glass" to "real fighters," quickly gaining fame in the gay community, but facing discrimination from their fellow firefighters. To make matters worse, Chuck Levine seems to have found his soulmate: a beautiful lawyer (played by Jessica Biel) who defends them. They develop feelings for each other, but Chuck Levine's gay identity hampers any further development. Things soon spiral out of Chuck Levine and Larry Valentine's control, and finding a way to get their lives back on track becomes a pressing issue for them.
