At the end of World War I, the United States sent troops to Europe to fight. Wealthy young man Jim (played by John Gilbert) also joined the army and quickly became friends with Slim, a former construction worker, and Bull, a bartender. The troops landed in France and were stationed in a small village. There, Jim met a French peasant girl, Melisande (played by Renée Adorée), and a romance quickly blossomed. Soon, the troops received orders to head to the front lines, and Jim was forced to leave. Melisande chased after him in a military truck and Jim threw his military boots to her as a sign of his love. At the front, under heavy artillery fire, Jim, Slim, and Bull anxiously hid in a shell hole. It was decided by drawing lots that Slim would charge out to face the enemy's artillery. The gunfire eventually stopped, but Slim did not return. Worried, Jim searched for him and found Slim's body among the enemy lines. The American forces launched a major counteroffensive, and Jim fought bravely but was wounded in the leg, landing him in a field hospital. There, he heard that Melisande's village was in great danger, so he sneaked out of the hospital and rushed to the village only to find it in ruins...
