The story takes place in a news television station in Washington. Jane (Holly Hunter) is a news program producer who is dedicated to her work and possesses a strong sense of ethics and responsibility, making her a key figure in the production team. During an interview, anchor Tom (William Hurt) is unexpectedly moved to tears by the interviewee, which shocks Jane and causes her to be drawn to Tom's kindness and sincerity. Allen (Albert Brooks) is Jane's partner, and he sees Tom's tears as a complete hoax and performance, but no one believes him. As the television station faces layoffs, the clueless Allen is unfortunately fired, while the savvy and smooth Tom climbs the ranks. Fortunately, in the end, the truth reveals Tom's hypocrisy, leading Jane to make the right choice.
