In 73 BC, Spartacus (played by Kirk Douglas), a slave from the Roman province of Libya, falls in love with the female slave Varinia (played by Jean Simmons) at the gladiatorial school in Capua. That same year, the slaves in the gladiatorial school, led by Spartacus, rise up in rebellion and gain their freedom. Spartacus reunites with Varinia, and they get married. The uprising shocks the ruling elite of Rome and intensifies the conflict between the patricians and the plebeians in the Senate. The patrician general Crassus (played by Laurence Olivier) seizes the opportunity to defeat the plebeian leader Glabar (played by Charles Laughton) and usurps the power of consul, establishing a dictatorship. Glabar plans to secretly release the army of slaves to undermine Crassus, but Crassus buys off pirates and recalls two armies fighting abroad. The Spartacus rebel army faces enemies on three fronts, outnumbered, and tens of thousands of slaves die. He, along with his wife and six thousand surviving comrades, is captured by Crassus. At the last moment, thanks to Glabar's help, the situation changes again.
