Jesse (Richard Gere) is a rebellious and unconventional young man leading a free-spirited life. In Las Vegas, Jesse steals a car and gets into a shootout with the police, accidentally killing an officer and becoming a fugitive. With no other choice, Jesse embarks on a journey to escape, aiming for Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, Jesse finds a girl he met before, Monica (Valérie Kaprisky), and falls in love with her at first sight, hoping that she will join him in living in Mexico. Monica, raised in a very conservative family, leads a regimented life, and Jesse's bold suggestion excites her. However, Monica eventually discovers Jesse's wanted notice and realizes she's been with a murderer. In a panic, Monica reports him to the police.
