In 1926, young intellectual Xiao Jianqiu (Sun Daolin) accepted the invitation of his old classmate Tao Mukang (Gao Bo) to teach at a middle school in a small town in eastern Zhejiang. On the boat to his new post, he encountered Wen Sao (Shangguan Yunzhu), whose husband died in the Guangzhou uprising, and he developed a sense of sympathy for her. At a welcome dinner held by Tao Mukang, he met Tao's lively and gracious sister, Tao Lan (Xie Fang). During their conversation, he discovered that the widow he met on the boat was actually the family of his old classmate Li Zhihao.
