Alice (Ellen Burstyn) is a full-time housewife who has spent years at home caring for her husband and raising their son, living a peaceful and happy life. However, one day, her husband dies in an accident, leaving her and their eleven-year-old son Tommy (Alfred Lutter III) to face a harsh society and fight for their future. When she was younger, Alice loved to sing, and now she has moved to a small town with Tommy, where she sings in a bar. One day, she meets a man named Ben (Harvey Keitel), a strong and confident man who awakens long-suppressed feelings in Alice. Just as she thinks happiness is within reach, she realizes she has fallen into another nightmare. Can Alice continue to live strong in the face of continuous setbacks?
