Directed by Yoshimitsu Morita, this special work for Toho's 60th anniversary, based on the works of Fujiko Fujio, the author of "Doraemon," is a story similar to "Back to the Future" and won the Best Sound Award at the 1993 Japanese Academy Awards. The film follows manga artist Naho Yuko and Kanegawa Yoko, who transforms from an ordinary office worker to an everyday housewife, as they reincarnate back 10 years with their current memories. Utilizing the "memories" of the future, they navigate work, love, and finances with ease. The two female leads are Shizuka Kudo, Takuya Kimura's wife, and Misa Shimizu from "Warm Current Under the Akabashi," along with cameo appearances from various famous manga artists, including Fujiko Fujio, and celebrities like Toshiyuki Nishida and Kyoka Suzuki. The ending theme is the famous song "Last Christmas" by Wham!, evoking a heartwarming and touching sentiment.
This film's standout feature lies in its original screenplay. When you mention Fujiko F. Fujio, many people will immediately recognize "Doraemon." The creator of the most beloved character in Japanese manga history is an author filled with wonderful imagination, and this film, which initiated the "yesterday returns" trend, is adapted from his manga works.
Perhaps because the script is written by a manga artist, one of the two key women—Naho Yuko—is a manga artist herself. In her "normal" life, she is a woman struggling in both her career and love life. She had a chance to publish a work ten years ago, but due to a traffic jam caused by an earthquake, she was late to meet her editor and lost her serialization opportunity. On Christmas Day ten years later, she meets a fortune teller and soon dies unexpectedly, only to find herself back ten years in the past as if waking from a dream.
This film, which can be considered the "pioneer" of this genre, provides a prototype for future imitations and surpassing works, while establishing several rules for the "yesterday returns" genre:
- Lovers are just supporting characters; companionship is what's important.
- "Memories of the future" may bring fame and fortune but will not bring true happiness.
In her first "rebirth," Yuko chooses to draw others' manga first, but discovers that this does not fulfill her true desires. She eventually realizes that copying others’ work won't work; only her own talent can be eternally possessed. In her final choice, she draws "the manga she truly wants to create"—perhaps this is the hope and voice of the author Fujiko F. Fujio!
In addition to the lead actors Misa Shimizu and Shizuka Kudo, the "stolen manga authors" like Rumiko Takahashi make cameo appearances as themselves, which adds an interesting feature.
