Wallis (played by Robert Duvall) is a missionary whose wife (played by Farrah Fawcett) is beautiful and charming. He works in Texas, inspiring many followers. However, one day, his life takes a drastic turn when he discovers that his wife is having an affair with a younger missionary. In his fury, he loses control and beats the young missionary, leaving him in a coma. Confronted with this, Wallis decides to go into hiding, fleeing to a remote town, where he secretly repents for his past. In the small town, Wallis starts his missionary work again under a new identity and earns the respect of the locals. However, his wife eventually discovers his whereabouts.
