Football is incredibly important to the residents of Canaan Town. As the beloved coach of their high school team, the Wolves, Gilmer (played by Jon Voight) has the ultimate authority, having led the Wolves to win the state championship twice. Max (played by James Van Der Beek) and Lance (played by Paul Walker) are best friends who share everything, and Lance is a star forward on the Wolves. However, as an important game approaches, Lance gets injured and is replaced by the unproven Max. To everyone’s surprise, Max performs well and suddenly becomes the town hero.
