In 1960s Detroit, three African American girls, Tina (Beyoncé Knowles), Effie (Jennifer Hudson), and Laurel (Anika Noni Rose), form the group "Dream" with the ambition to launch their singing careers in a talent competition. However, the results of the competition leave them greatly disappointed. A silver lining appears when they catch the attention of manager Curtis (Jamie Foxx), who is determined to turn them into popular marketable singers. Thus, the three girls begin their journey into the unknown path of stardom. Curtis designs a complete plan for them, featuring performances as backup singers on stage with big-name artists, and then repositions the roles of the three members of the group for solo acts—Effie, who has the best voice but lacks the looks, is removed from the lead singer position, while the attractive Tina takes on the role of lead vocalist. This decision sparks a storm within the group. The relationships among the three singers begin to complicate as they taste fame, and tensions arise between Effie and Curtis.
