In the shrine of a suburban temple, nine young samurai are secretly meeting. The castle's elder's nephew, Iizaka (played by Yuuzou Kayama), is preparing to seek help from the chief constable Kikui to resolve internal issues. However, the scruffy-looking samurai Tsubaki Sanjuro (played by Toshiro Mifune) appears and tells them that Kikui is actually the mastermind behind it all. As expected, the temple is soon surrounded by Kikui's men, and Sanjuro intervenes to save the young men. Meanwhile, Muroto Hanbee (played by Tatsuya Nakadai) appreciates Sanjuro's skills and invites him to join them. They then go to find the castle elder but discover that they are too late; he has been kidnapped. They arrive at the samurai Terada’s home to plan a rescue, with the enemy located next door at the Kurofu mansion. While Kikui has imprisoned the castle elder, he is also plotting to lure the young samurai out of hiding, but thanks to Sanjuro, they are saved. Through a clever scheme, they succeed in the rescue. However, Muroto Hanbee does not let Sanjuro off easily; the outcome of their confrontation hangs by a thread.
