BV (played by Ryan Gosling) is a young man filled with ideal aspirations for music. In order to establish himself in the industry, he decides to collaborate with super producer Cook (played by Michael Fassbender). Faye (played by Rooney Mara) is Cook's girlfriend and assistant, and during their time together, BV and Faye gradually become mutually attracted. Although Faye and Cook have always been in an open relationship, BV's interference makes Cook feel very uncomfortable, leading to a falling out among the three. BV ends up with a wealthy woman named Amanda (played by Cate Blanchett), Faye seeks comfort in the arms of a lesbian named Zoe (played by Bérénice Marlohe), while Cook marries Roland (played by Natalie Portman).
